ANCIENT OLYMPIA TOUR (FULL DAY)
Starting our private day tour from Athens early in the morning at around 7:00-8:00 am, we will drive by the coastal road of Attica along the Saronic Gulf to the Corinth Canal, which connects the Ionian and Aegean seas. After approximately 1 hour we will make our first stop at the Corinth Canal, an ideal place for amazing photos and a quick snack.
After leaving the Corinth Canal, we will head to our main destination through a wonderful and scenic landscape inside the Peloponnese Peninsula. We will need approximately 2.5 hours to arrive at Ancient Olympia, a UNESCO Heritage Site. Olympia was the center of worship of Zeus (the father of the 12 Olympian Gods) and the mother of the ancient Olympic Games in classical times. From 776 BC to 393 AD the ancient Olympic Games were held there.
You will visit the Temple of Zeus, the Stadium, the Temple of Hera, the Phidias Workshop, the Pelopion and so many other structures. Moreover, you will browse inside the Archeological Museum of Olympia one of the most important Museums in Greece, where some of the most remarkable works of art are held dated as far back as the 10th Century BC including the sculptures from the temple of Zeus, Nike of Paionios and Hermes of Praxiteles.
Finishing the sightseeing it is time for rest and lunch. You can choose either a restaurant or a traditional tavern in the modern city of Olympia before we head back to Athens. After approximately 12 hours you will be back at your lodging.
